Happy Tuesday! Hope everyone is doing well during these rough times… Let’s keep up the good work team NZ as we prepare for another lockdown!

For me, I haven’t done any pixel art for a couple of days now, got hooked with Black Clover anime! 🀣

So I decided to update the website theme and website image banner today to showcase a more vibrant pixel art game look for the website.

I finished a couple of green monochromatic pixel art tiles last week and decided to convert theme into their equivalent 64 palette and include theme in the website banner.

It was a bit easy to convert them since the objects doesn’t have that many color combination.

The image banner still needs more stuff so I’ll definitely add more to it (watch out for it). Will also update the social media banners in the coming days.

Green Monochromatic Platform

Happy Monday everyone!

Just sharing another quick pixel art. This one took me roughly two hours to make. I made the left edge yesterday afternoon for about an hour. Then another hour today (after dinner) for the middle platform and a quick copy-paste, flip and touch up on the right platform.

The sample image above is 200% resize and the original tile per platform is 32×32. Really happy how it looks.

Yesterday, I was looking at my ugly banner and decided to create a draft platformer pixel art game scene using a green monochromatic color scheme. This is the first art in the scene so I still have a long ways to go!

I think I’m getting the hang of the pixel art shading technique. Pixel Rocks could become my specialty 🀣

Top Down Character Walking Cycle

8 Frames Cycle

It’s screenshot Saturday and I’m happy to share this cute character template 8 frame walking cycle!

This is going to be a part of the character templates I’m going to use with my game projects and I’m really happy how it turned out 😁. I admit it’s still rough around the edges like the body (waist area) needs better movement to compliment the vertical leg motion but I can improve that later.

The character size is 48×48 pixels and I free-styled mouse drawn and animated the body parts using Aseprite.

Took me around an hour to complete. Prior to that, I was doing some character sketches (by hand) to get a feel on what art style to use; long sleek body, short round body, big head, small head etc., and finally decided on the short round big head type. I also studied the different techniques in animation so it was a really fun full art course for me.

I’ve included a simple art style guide below with my notes for future reference. I also recorded a video while creating this pixel art animation. I’ll share that once I’ve finished the video edits and available in my Patreon and YouTube page.

Starting a World Map Tile Set

Raise you hand if you’re a 90’s kid playing video games! Don’t be shy… You’re not alone! We’re always gona be young (at heart) 😊

If you’re like me, who started the computer nerd adventure at a young age, you would have definitely played King’s Bounty and Dune 2 (or at least heard about them). Two of my favorite classic computer games! And I was playing them in monochrome monitors… Dang!

King’s Bounty (MS-DOS 1990)

I spent sleepless nights playing King’s Bounty! Though the goal was to retrieve the king’s scepter, I always try to build / recruit the most powerful army so no one could stand in my way (Vampires are the most powerful not the Dragons πŸ˜‚)

Dune 2 (MS-DOS 1992)

When Dune 2 came out, it already had movie cut scenes (the PC always asked for the floppy disk that holds the movie hahaha). You can already see the art improvements. Just look at the details of the sandworm!

These are some of the games that got me hooked into pixel art.

With the games I want to create, I’m making a world map tile set or at least the template for the tile set which I can reuse for different game genres.

Been reading pixel art tutorials and sample art work from various pixel artists and I hope I’ve already improved on my craft.

Here’ a sample tile set I’ve been working on the past months.

It’s the first draft and I also want to create different versions per season. I’m also working on the vegetation, roads, landscape and buildings. I’ve also created a dedicated page in the website for this Tile Map project.

Welcome to Candy Cabinets website!

Hello and welcome to (the new) Candy Cabinets website! My name is James Bacero, I’m a C# programmer by day and a pixel artist / indie game developer by night and every free time I can do my hobby! (for now 😁)

I mentioned “the new” because Candy Cabinets’ website has been around for some time now and to be honest, it was a challenge to maintain a proper website that showcase my artwork and projects.

I admit, I was stingy to fund my website (I still feel I am 🀣) since I’m a programmer and the programmer’s mentally is “I can do it myself”!

But at last I convinced myself (with help from motivational videos) to actually bite the bullet and put funding on a proper website builder that can make my art creation, game development and blogging life easier to share!

What’s new with the website?

  • New website theme. I changed the website theme to an artsy / blogger looking theme to showcase my pixel arts and indie game projects.
  • Developer blog. Yes there is one pre-made at itch.io but I have more control over my content posts using a website blog builder. At itch, it’s more on technical blogging while here, I can write whatever I fancy, in-line with my hobby of course.
  • Contact form replaced by Subscribe form. There’s really no value for me having a “Contact form” since all I get from it are people giving me sales pitch to improve my website… πŸ˜’ (Well here we are! 😜). At least the subscribe form gives me the chance to reach out to true fans of pixel art and video games to follow my work.

Why do I do my art work and games at night and on my free time?

I ask myself the same question every so often, and I always answer – “I’m an artist, I want to express myself

Yes, I get burned out developing, since I develop stuffs (work and hobby) almost 10-12 hours a day! But at the moment, I have no choice. I have to suck it up, work a day job to help my family and then whatever amount is left, I funnel it to my pixel art and game development work.

I know I will finally get there. The ultimate dream of making pixel art and video games a full time business (aside from the extra stuff I want to do e.g. vlogging, aqua scaping and wood working πŸ˜‚).

Is Candy Cabinets still making mobile games?

Unfortunately, I’m letting go of the mobile game development world and focusing on PC and console indie game development. It was fun developing mobile games, I created two games: Mad Swipe (available on Google Play) and Zeroing (available on Google Play and Apple Store) and I’m grateful to my friends and mobile business partners who helped me create, test, improve and monetize those games. Thank you!

It was a roller coaster 3 year journey, making mobile games but I know the stories I want to tell and the artwork I want to create would resonate more with video game players using PCs and consoles.

So what’s next?

At the time of writing this blog, I’m taking on the Ultimate Game Dev Course by Thomas Brush and Jason Weimann. I still have a long ways to go! The contents they’re sharing is an absolute gold mine and I have my work cut out for me.

I’ve kind of organized my schedule to watch one video tutorial a day (after office) then create and record a video of me doing one pixel art a night. Hopefully, this gets me to the pixel art level I want to be and also soak up all the experience Thomas and Jason are sharing to get me to the indie game dev promise land!

Expect the usual screen shot Saturdays but this time with pixel arts and indie game development focused for PC.
